Broadcast your set from your DJ controller

Stream your mix live on Mixlr using DJ software and an external controller with an audio interface.

This article covers broadcasting with DJ software — such as Serato or Rekordbox — using an external DJ controller and an audio interface. You'll use your DJ software to mix tracks, your controller to manage levels and crossfader, and the audio interface to route the audio back into your computer so Mixlr can capture it.

What you'll need

• DJ software (e.g. Serato, Rekordbox)

• External DJ controller connected to your computer via USB

• Audio interface connected to your computer via USB

• RCA to ¼" jack cable (phono to jack) to connect your controller to the audio interface

Check your controller's outputs

Audio outputs are usually located at the back of your DJ controller. The number of outputs affects how you connect everything:

• One stereo output — connect your audio interface to this output. If you're using speakers, connect them to your audio interface too.

• More than one stereo output — connect your audio interface to the main output and your speakers to the booth or secondary output (e.g. Booth Out). This lets you control your room volume independently without affecting what your listeners hear.

Connect the cables

1. Connect your DJ controller to your computer via USB so your controller can communicate with your DJ software.

2. Connect your DJ controller's main output to your audio interface using an RCA (phono) to ¼" jack cable. Plug the phono end into the controller output and the jack end into the audio interface input.

3. Connect your audio interface to your computer via USB.

Set up Mixlr

1. Make sure audio is playing in your DJ software.

2. Open Mixlr Studio and in the channel area, select the + icon

3. Select the source selector at the top of the input channel. From the input list, select your audio interface. You should see an audio signal appear in the app.

Set your levels and go live

Warning: If you see the CLIP indicator, your audio may sound distorted to listeners. Lower your fader until it disappears.

Once your levels are set, you're ready to go live on Mixlr.
