How to set up a microphone for broadcasting on Mixlr

Set up your microphone in Mixlr Studio or Mixlr for Creators to start broadcasting.

Mixlr works with any microphone your computer or mobile device recognises — including your device's built-in mic, a USB microphone, or an XLR microphone connected through an audio interface. This article explains how to select your microphone in Mixlr Studio and set up mic access on Mixlr for Creators.

Setting up your microphone in Mixlr Studio

Mixlr Studio uses input channels to manage your audio. Each input channel has a source selector where you choose which microphone or audio device to use. You can access your input channels directly from the main broadcast screen in Mixlr Studio. Mixlr Studio opens with one input channel already in the channel area — you can configure this to use your microphone, or add a new one alongside it.

1. Open Mixlr Studio.

2. Select the source selector at the top of the input channel — this shows Select Source if nothing is connected, or the current input name if one is already set.

Tip: To add a second microphone or audio device alongside your existing channel, select the + icon in the channel area and choose Audio device.

3. Choose your microphone from the list of available audio input devices.

4. Speak into your microphone — the level meter on that channel should respond. If it does, you're all set.

Note: If your microphone doesn't appear in the list, check that it's connected and recognised by your computer, then restart Mixlr Studio.

Using an XLR microphone? You'll need an audio interface to connect it to your computer. The interface will appear as an input source in the source selector.

Setting up your microphone in Mixlr for Creators

When you open Mixlr for Creators for the first time after logging in, you'll be prompted to allow microphone access. Tap Allow — the app needs this permission to pick up your audio.

Once permission is granted, the app automatically uses your device's built-in microphone. If you connect a headset or external microphone, the app will switch to it automatically.

Note: If you previously denied microphone access, go to your device's Settings, find the Mixlr Creator app, and enable the Microphone permission.
